Argonne, Purdue Calumet Agree on Water Research, Economic Development

Researchers from Purdue University-Calumet and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on applied research to advance knowledge in water resources and to support regional economic development.

Based in Hammond, Indiana, the new Purdue Calumet Water Institute aims to use water as a competitive advantage to attract and retain companies that depend on the availability of abundantly clean and secure sources of water for the success of their core businesses. Read more



Automation Alley headquartersTARDEC/NAC Opens Office at Automation Alley Headquarters

Automation Alley, southeast Michigan’s regional technology cluster, attracts the creators and consumers of diverse technologies from a variety of industries worldwide who are dedicated to stimulating the area’s high tech business environment. TARDEC has set up an office in the new headquarters, through the National Automotive Center, to better aid the development of dual-use technologies with the automotive sector and other high tech industries. The intent of this office is to interface with local companies to enhance TARDEC’s role in bolstering the state and local technology business climate while transferring technologies of mutual interest. Argonne Expert Addresses Energy, Environmental Impacts of Fuel Ethanol

A national debate has arisen over the net energy and environmental benefits of substituting ethanol for gasoline in transportation fuels. Argonne National Laboratory researcher Michael Wang, a leading expert in the field, presented the results of his research recently at the Ethanol Energy Open Forum, sponsored by the National Corn Growers Association at the National Press Club, Washington, D.C. Less is More: Reducing Brightness to Make a Better Paper

Researchers at the USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory have joined with several other federal agencies and the pulp and paper industry in an effort to reduce the economic and environmental costs of paper used by government agencies—while simultaneously improving paper quality. Glenn Receives Four R&D 100 "Oscars of Invention"

Guided by NASA's quest for exploration, Glenn Research Center researchers have developed technologies that will not only address the needs of the nation's goals for space exploration, but also improve the quality of life on Earth. Four GRC-developed technologies are among the world's Top 100 technologies recognized with an R&D 100 Award — commonly referred to as an Oscar of Invention — determined by a panel of outside experts and the editors of R&D 100 magazine. It’s been an exciting end to FY05. I hope you enjoyed our meeting in Chicago as much as I did. I’d like to extend special thanks to Larry Dickens, Gib Marguth, Jesse Erlich, Courtney Price, and Gus Vu for their time and efforts that made the meeting a success. The videos of the training sessions conducted at the meeting should be available on DVD and from our website shortly.

As we plan for FY 06, I’d like to solicit input from each of you regarding what the Midwest Region should do. The FLC is the only nationwide organization of and for government T2 professionals. As such, we can make it whatever we want it to be. Read more
