AFRL Tests Transparent Armor
With the goal of protecting military members facing the threat of armor-piercing weapons on the battlefield, engineers at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) are testing a new type of transparent armor that is stronger and lighter than traditional materials.
The AFRL, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, in conjunction with the Army Research Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland., and the University of Dayton Research Institute, Ohio, is testing aluminum oxynitride (ALON™) as a replacement for the traditional multilayered glass transparencies used in existing ground and air armored vehicles. TARDEC Acquires Advanced Research Institute at Oakland University
The Fastening and Joining Research Institute was established in 2003 at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, with congressional funding that is administered by U.S. Army TACOM and TARDEC. The institute is a one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art facility with a specific mission to conduct fundamental and applied research in four technological niche areas that impact vehicle safety, reliability, and readiness. Permanent magnets are important in a broad variety of commercial technologies, from car starters to alternators for wind power generation to computer hard drives. Researchers at the Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory have found new clues to making those magnets longer-lasting and more powerful. Read more
NIOSH Signs MOU with Federal Fire Administration
NIOSH and the U.S. Fire Administration signed a Memorandum of Understanding November 21, 2005, to identify collaborative efforts the two agencies can undertake with the goal of improving safety and health conditions for firefighters throughout the U.S. Read more

Recycling is not just good for the environment, it is good for business. Argonne National Laboratory researchers have developed a technology to successfully recover plastic from obsolete automobiles that may add plastic to the list of valuable materials recycled from old cars and trucks. The Midwest Region will again be exhibiting at the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress in Detroit, April 3-6. We expect to have about 20 exhibit hall passes, so if anyone would like to use them, please let us know.
The FLC national meeting will be held May 1-4 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This year’s meeting will include a full day of technology transfer training at Fundamental, Intermediate, and Advanced levels and the prestigious FLC awards program. Read more
