Argonne Tests Find Near-Zero Emissions for BMW Hydrogen 7
Independent tests conducted by engineers at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory on the mono-fueled version of the BMW Hydrogen 7 prototype have found that the car's hydrogen-powered engine surpasses the super-ultra low-emission vehicle (SULEV) level, the most stringent emissions performance standard to date. Argonne's Lithium-ion Battery Technology to Be Commercialized by Japan's Toda Kogyo
The Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory and Toda Kogyo Corp. of Japan have reached a worldwide licensing agreement for the commercial production and sales of Argonne's patented composite cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The materials result in longer-lasting, safer batteries for hybrid electric vehicles, cell phones, laptop computers and other applications. Read more
Newly Created Position Facilitates Business Development Through Partnerships
The Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) will be creating new partnerships with other organizations (including industry representatives, other government agencies, and universities) to enhance technology transfer in wood products research. Read more
Building a Community of Research
The Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) and Purdue University have joined forces to promote and establish cooperation in forest products utilization education, research, and development. Specifically, the partnership will have an emphasis on nanotechnology, forest biomass-to-energy, and forest biorefinery. A five-year Memorandum of Understanding was signed in December 2006. Read more
Illinois Tech Index Launched
Last week, NASDAQ saw the debut of the Illinois Tech Index (symbol: ILTI), currently recognized as the only technology index in the U.S. tracking publicly traded technology companies within an individual state. Based on 61 firms headquartered in Illinois, the Illinois Tech Index is derived from the aggregate value of the firms' total shares outstanding. When the index officially started May 19, the base value of the ILTI was 1000.00. As of Wednesday's close of markets, the Index finished at 969.20. Read more
Minnesota Legislature Creates New Office of Science and Technology to Assist Entrepreneurs
In support of Gov. Tim Pawlenty's Strategic Entrepreneurial Economic Development (SEED) initiative, legislators established the Office of Science and Technology to help small businesses and entrepreneurs access federal grant programs for technology development, according to the governor's press office. The Bullard-Sherwood Research-to-Practice Award, named for Edward W. Bullard, the inventor of the hard hat, and R. Jeremy Sherwood, the inventor of the personal industrial hygiene sampling pump, is given by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to recognize recipients for outstanding contributions in three categories: knowledge, interventions, and technology. This year the award and honorable mentions went to projects addressing issues around flavoring-related lung disease, reproductive concerns associated with occupational cycling, protective clothing analysis, commercial fishing, toxic metals, and risk of serious injuries among responders and health-care workers from the ignition of portable oxygen resuscitators.
