NASA Leads Team in Establishing a Renewable Hydrogen Fueling Station
NASA's Glenn Research Center is leading a team of industry and university partners in demonstrating a prototype of a commercial hydrogen fueling station that uses wind and solar power to produce hydrogen from water. This initial installation will produce hydrogen from Lake Erie water to fuel a mass transit bus powered by fuel cells. Read more
Argonne's Lithium-Ion Battery Technology to be Commercialized by BASF
The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory and BASF, the world's largest chemical company, have signed a world-wide licensing agreement to mass produce and market Argonne's patented composite cathode materials to manufacturers of advanced lithium-ion batteries. Read more
AFRL Assists UNLV Researchers with UAV Testing
AFRL personnel recently participated in an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) test to investigate the performance and operational characteristics of hybrid propulsion systems for UAVs. The test was one part of a much larger multidisciplinary collaborative effort with the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). In preparation for the test, the propulsion system of a commercial off-the-shelf UAV was modified from its original configuration. The UAV's single, centerline electric motor was replaced with two off-centerline electric motors and one centerline heavy fuel engine. Read more
A Southern Pest Finds a Home Up North
Termite infestation does not generate excitement in most people. But U.S. Forest Service Forest Product Laboratory (FPL) researchers Rachel Arango and Rick Green aren't most people. In fact, this dynamic duo didn't simply find a termite infestation in their laboratory, they strategically built up a colony of 20,000 termites over the past five years. Read more |

Nanotechnology: Getting Small
Nanotechnology—working with materials that are 100 nanometers or smaller—has potential applications in many facets of human life, from consumer products to medicine. It allows scientists to work with completely new materials by controlling matter at the atomic level, where the properties of matter change in ways researchers are just beginning to understand. While the potential benefits of nanotechnology are known, researchers and concerned consumers alike have raised questions about the potential risks. Read more
