GE Acquires Argonne-UChicago Startup SmartSignal
GE Intelligent Platforms has purchased SmartSignal, a company started by the University of Chicago based on technology developed at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory. Read more |
Air Force Awarded U.S. Patent for Earpiece System Developed by the 711 HPW
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has awarded a patent to the U.S. Air Force for its award-winning Attenuating Custom Communications Earpiece System (ACCES®). The Air Force Research Laboratory, 711th Human Performance Wing, Human Effectiveness Directorate, Warfighter Interface Division, Battlespace Acoustics Branch (711 HPW/RHCB) partnered with Westone Laboratories, Inc., to develop the deep-insert, custom-molded ACCES hearing protection technology under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA). NASA Invites Students to Send Experiments to the Edge of Space
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is inviting student teams to design and build experiments the agency will fly into the stratosphere, a near-space environment, more than 100,000 feet above the Earth. NASA's second annual Balloonsat High-Altitude Flight competition is open to student teams in grades 9 to 12 from the United States and its territories. Each team of four or more students must submit an experiment proposal to NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland by February 11. Read more

NASA Glenn Promotes STEM Education at East Cleveland City Schools
A special program to encourage students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) was held recently at Heritage Middle School and Chambers Elementary School, East Cleveland, Ohio. Superintendent Myrna Loy Corley opened the event by welcoming students and introducing guests who took advantage of and benefited from NASA educational programs. Read more |

Navy LAIRCM Integrated Product Team Awarded Prestigious Honor
For its exceptional achievements and contributions to electronic warfare and related fields, the Association of Old Crows (AOC) recently presented the Department of the Navy Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (DoN LAIRCM) Integrated Product Team (IPT) with the 2010 AOC IPT Award at its 47th annual AOC International Symposium and Convention. Dr. Datta V. Gaitonde Receives 2010 AIAA Thermophysics Award

FPL Research Making Its Way to the Marketplace
The Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) has been involved in research to develop three-dimensional (3-D) molded fiber structures using waste materials since the 1980s. At that time, "green" characteristics did not bring a premium, and commercialization efforts were unsuccessful; however, research continued on 3-D structural panels. Read more |
NASA Glenn Tests Planetary Excavation Tools and Vehicles
NASA's Glenn Research Center recently held a demonstration of digging equipment and mining vehicles for planetary surface material. Sponsored by NASA's Partnerships, Innovation and Commercial Space Division, Glenn and the Northern Centre for Advanced Technology (NORCAT) are conducting tests that simulate the mining of planetary surface materials, with the goal of turning the captured materials into life-sustaining resources.
